Your child CAN learn!

You can create slideshows to help your autistic child to expand their vocabulary, learn academics, and even learn to read. Get the information you need to teach your own child using PowerPoint or a similar program right here. You should have PowerPoint and a microphone and speakers in order to do this.

Hyperlexia is the superability of autistic children to read long before they can speak or even be expected to speak, even if there is no comprehension of what they're reading. Somewhere between 5-10% of autistic children are hyperlexic.

To get ideas on how to help your hyperlexic learn comprehension, phonics, and to further their reading ability I highly recommend the following books:
But of course, using these slideshows opens up other possibilities as well! My child has finally learned his colors, three simple shapes, and how to count to 20. He has also learned how to sort.

To get started, please download the following things:
Install the audacity program and the Print Clearly font onto your computer. There are instructions on each site to help you if you are having trouble.

Watch the slideshow (sampleslideshow) to get an idea of how it works. Using the audacity program to record your own voice, and the Print Clearly font in the slideshow itself, you can use PowerPoint to make slides that will teach your child academics and reading that will interest them in ways 1 on 1 time cannot.
  • If you don't understand how to use PowerPoint, google it or check out a book at the library.
  • When recording audio on Audacity, choose "Export as WAV" to save your work so you can use the sound bite in PowerPoint. Record and save ONE sound bite at a time ("one" and "two" not "one, two")
  • Read the books suggested if you can and have fun creating your own curriculum! Have your child watch their slideshow at least twice a day for full absorption.
Easy to read lettering and simple concepts are a great place to start!
